careers.

We are a small but mighty team of Human Dynamos working at the intersection of art, design, engineering, and fabrication.

Our team size flexes with the work we do — anywhere from 4 to 15 people, depending on what’s rolling through the workshop at the time.

working with us.

We work on a wide range of projects — from public art and exhibitions to large-scale architectural pieces and everything in between. No two weeks are the same, and that’s exactly how we like it!

We’re committed to creating an inclusive, supportive workplace that values diversity in all its forms. We recognise that people think, work, and create differently, and we see this as a strength.

Over the years, we’ve worked with some seriously talented people. Their craft, integrity, and passion have shaped our portfolio and reputation, and many have gone on to build successful careers, businesses, and studios of their own.

If you’re curious about what it’s like to work with us, read on.

human dynamo

(noun.)

1. a highly energetic and indefatigable person;
2. an energetic person with unusual initiative.

roles.

Because our workload ebbs and flows, full-time roles are rare. Instead, we often collaborate with self-employed contractors who bring specific skills to specific projects, whether that’s digital sculpting, CNC machining, fabrication, finishing, or specialist material knowledge.

We prioritise working with a trusted pool of people who’ve collaborated with us before. We do our best to keep good people busy, but we’re upfront: this is project-based work, not guaranteed ongoing employment.

If that kind of working environment appeals to you, Human Dynamo Workshop can be a great place to build experience, whether you're fresh out of uni or more established in your career.

what we look for.

When we look to bring on great people, we’re interested in:

  • Your skill set and training

  • Experience with physical builds and working in a technical workshop

  • A solid understanding of materials

  • Your creativity — where your strengths lie and how you approach problems

  • Computer fluency, including CAD or relevant software

  • What part of industrial art excites you most

  • Your personality and team fit

  • Your NZ residency status and longer-term plans in Aotearoa

  • A full driver’s licence is strongly preferred.

We’re based in New Zealand, and immigration and work-permit requirements are strict. There are many talented local designers and makers keen to work in this field.

internships + work experience.

From time to time, we offer short term internships for people who:

  • Come from an industrial design or related background

  • Have strong CAD skills

  • Demonstrate a good balance of technical ability and artistic thinking

Internships are never more than two weeks, unpaid.

applications.

We receive a lot of enquiries, so only accept job applications that are submitted by email. Please don't turn up at the workshop with a portfolio.

In your email, include:

  • A brief CV

  • A short portfolio (a few of your best pieces — quality over quantity)

  • A link to your website and Instagram account, if you have one.

To apply, please email our General Manager directly at maxuivel@humandynamo.co.nz.

All applications are reviewed and kept on file. If there’s a good fit for an upcoming project, we’ll be in touch.

Good luck with your job search!
