our story.
Human Dynamo was born from a shared passion for making, and a deep curiosity about how things are created. Founders and husband and wife team, Rob Uivel and Sue Dorrington, combined their industrial design and visual communication roots to build a workshop and studio that transforms ideas into extraordinary builds.
Starting in a basement in the 1980s and fuelled by late-night film set builds and experimental model-making, Rob forged a reputation for creativity and technical ingenuity — from building a replica 1:1 scale model of a F18 fighter jet that was realistic enough to fool the NZ Army, to studying Ceramic Design & Manufacture in England.
Sue, a visual thinker with a background in art direction and design, joined the workshop and studio in 2001, helping to evolve Human Dynamo into the collaborative, CAD-driven, multi-disciplinary creative production partner it is today.
Over the years, we have grown from a team of two to a collective of dynamo designers, makers, and problem-solvers delivering world-class work across contemporary art, exhibitions, film, architecture, and more. What hasn’t changed is our belief in the power of material, process and craft, and a relentless curiosity about how things are made.
From hand-built prototypes to large-scale installations, Human Dynamo is where creative vision meets technical execution, and ideas are brought to life in ways many never thought possible.
