Automation Prop in Mortal Engines (2018)

Mortal Engines (2018)

Mortal Engines is a post-apocalyptic adventure that blends industrial brutality with intricate steampunk design. To support this richly detailed world, Human Dynamo Workshop fabricated key practical elements combining mechanical engineering with traditional model-making techniques.

Shrike's automation

One of the film’s most compelling characters, Shrike, is a resurrected man transformed into a fearsome automaton — both terrifying and tragic.

Human Dynamo created Shrike’s automaton components using mechanical fabrication, moulding, casting and detailed finishing processes. The result was a physically grounded, unsettlingly human-like form designed for durability, performance and close-up cinematography.

Functional hero controller props

In Mortal Engines, land and airships are central to the narrative. Human Dynamo fabricated fully functional hero controller props that actors could physically operate on set.

Delivered pieces included:

  • ‘Jenny Haniver’ airship control systems

  • ‘Jasmin’ airship controller props

  • ‘Idiot Wind’ airship control assemblies

  • Custom panels, dials and interface components

Each piece balanced mechanical authenticity with the film’s layered steampunk aesthetic, ensuring practicality for filming while reinforcing the world’s industrial character.

By translating concept design into robust, working props, Human Dynamo helped bring the tactile, machine-driven world of Mortal Engines (2018) to life.
