Rainbow Springs Kiwi Experience and Interactive Creatures (2011 & 2018)
Educational and interactive playground creatures, a giant illuminated kiwi egg and tactile native animal heads fabricated for Rainbow Springs Nature Park, Rotorua.
Human Dynamo Workshop delivered two phases of work for Rainbow Springs Nature Park in Rotorua — a kiwi-focused educational experience in 2011, and a second set of interactive native-creature installations in 2018. Together the pieces help visitors connect with native New Zealand wildlife in ways that go beyond looking through glass.
Kiwi experience (2011)
We created a series of playground creatures and an interactive educational exhibit for Rainbow Springs' visitors. The centrepiece is a giant luminous kiwi egg that visitors can step inside — a walk-in installation housing educational technology and projection that brings the incubation process of the kiwi bird to life. A range of smaller back-lit kiwi eggs show embryos at different stages of development.
Interactive Creatures (2018)
Our team designed and built two interactive playground structures styled as native New Zealand creatures: a tuatara (reptile) and a weta (insect). Visitors can climb inside the sculpted heads and look out through the creatures' eyes, experiencing the world through tuatara or weta vision. The installations are realistic, robust and child-friendly — built to take years of family use.
