Shelters - Ana Iti (2022)
Custom steel frame fabrication for Shelters, a large-scale sculptural work by Māori artist Ana Iti, exhibited at Wellington's City Gallery.
Shelters — Ana Iti (2022)
The sculptural work Shelters was commissioned for City Gallery Wellington as part of artist Ana Iti's exhibition I must shroud myself in a stinging nettle. Human Dynamo Workshop fabricated the welded steel frames that form the structural backbone of the piece.
The exhibition presents two major works by Ana Iti, Shelters and Roharoha, tying together her practice across moving image, large-scale sculpture and text. Together, the works consider the notion of shelter in relation to the kahukura, a butterfly species endemic to Aotearoa.
Working closely with the artist, we translated the design into welded steel framework engineered to support the sculptural skin while sitting comfortably in the gallery space. The brief required precision, structural soundness and a finish that supports rather than competes with Iti's artistic vision.
